Yes, the title was not a joke. Family portraits that do not put people to sleep!
I know from experience that the older you get, the harder it becomes to get the whole family together for a portrait. Work schedules, kids, location! My immediate Family lives in three different states; Florida, Nevada and California. This makes it especially difficult to get everybody in the same room at same time. Although, even when you get everybody in the same room at the same time, It becomes hard to get everybody to make a nice face. Little Bobby, with is upside down smile or new fascination with picking his nose. Sally, with her ever developing duck face. Dad, if he doesn’t look like he has a stick up his ass, he just looks like somebody shit in his Cheerios! Let’s talk about mom, at this point in life she hates every photo taken and makes damn well sure everyone knows. Oh and lets not forget about little rover, that 5 pound hell beast that thinks your ankles are milk bones. Yes, I’m pale, I don’t get much sun! Any photographer that has done portraits has most likely come across this family.
I specialize in composite photography which means that I spend extra time with little Bobby to reverse that smile. I can devote a few seconds to explain why duck face isn’t attractive to Sally. I can at least try to coax a half smile out of Dad. I’ll assure your Mother that she is attractive. Although I tread lightly as to not offend your father.
After I capture the best shots of each family member, I’ll bring them into Photoshop and make one perfect photo. This also works if your family is geographically split like mine. I can capture half the family in Washington state, and the other half in New York City. Then I’ll put them all together and no one will be the wiser. Hell, 20 years from now the family may forgot that they weren’t together. “do you remember that time when we all got together for the family portrait” it will surely cause an argument!
The image we create won’t be just a standard 3.2.1 smile type of snapshot. Let’s get creative, let’s think of a theme, a concept, a situation. I love to create a single moment frozen in time. I’m pretty good at making the impossible possible. From flying kids to a whole house exploding with kittens! (kittens not included in standard packages)
If you’re ready for a family portrait you will be proud to hang on the wall, an image that you want to share with the world. A photograph that you will love looking at for the rest of your life. Send me an email, give me a call. Lets come up with an idea an bring it to life. – Michael Herb
